Hi,
For some reason tonight I was thinking back over good times and happened to remember a cider I once had. As an American, I don’t often get a chance to enjoy real cider. However, in the summer of 1984 or 1985 I certainly did. I was backpacking through the UK and picked up a couple of pints of scrumpy while I was in the area of Wells and Glastonbury. It was one of the best beverages I’ve ever had, of any sort, at any time. I’m hoping to track it down after all these years. If you can point me in the right direction, I’d be very happy. My Google searches aren’t really much help on this topic.
As I said, this was the summer of 1984 or 1985. I was a “starving student”, so I wouldn’t have been able to buy anything pricey. I remember buying two pint bottles. I think the bottles were ceramic or clay or something like that (crockery), tan in color if I’m remembering correctly. They had ceramic flip-top stoppers. The cider was slightly carbonated, and there was a higher percentage of alcohol than most ciders I’ve had. But what really stood out was the flavor and aroma. It smelled and tasted like crisp, green apples. I’m pretty sure it had not been pasteurized, or that aroma would have been destroyed. I don’t recall any sediment, but maybe it was there. I believe it was more dry than sweet. It was just like biting into a fresh green apple. I can remember it clearly after 25 years.
I don’t have any other info about the brand. I do know it said “scrumpy” on the label, but that’s about it.
It was a long time before I went back to the UK, mostly just to London. I always look for scrumpy, but I never find it. The canned varieties like Scrumpy Jack don’t even come close. In most wine and liquor stores I tried in London, it seemed hardly anyone even knew what “scrumpy” is.
Any recommendations on how to track it down or find something similar?
Any help or pointers are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill
