National Cider Tour Visits Gloucestershire and Herefordshire
Two well established perry producers near the Gloucestershire and Herefordshire border will be celebrating their success at CAMRA's National Cider and Perry Championships.
During an annual visit, to take place on Saturday October 11th 2008, members of CAMRA's National Cider and Perry Committee will pay tribute to Ross-on-Wye Cider, who won the National Silver Perry Award for their Blakeney Red perry, and to Hartland's Cider and Perry, for the National Bronze Perry Award.
Ross on Wye Cider and Perry (www.somersetmade.co.uk/oldscrump/ciderfarms/rosscider.php) are based at Broome Farm in Peterstow, which has been the home of the Johnson family for over seven decades. Over the years they have planted new trees to supply fruit for the growing production of cider and perry, and there are now over 70 varieties of cider apples and perry pears growing on the farm.
On hearing of his success, Mike Johnson of Ross-on-Wye Cider and Perry, said- ‘The team here are really pleased to win the Silver award for perry again. We used Blakeney Red, a reliable high quality pear originally from Forest of Dean, to make the winning perry. We value CAMRA's contribution to spreading the word about real cider and perry. Our challenge now is to win the Gold award!'
Hartland's Cider and Perry (www.somersetmade.co.uk/oldscrump/ciderfarms/hartlands.php) are based in Tirley, Gloucestershire, where Dereck Hartland continues a long family tradition spanning three generations. His Grandfather made cider at Flat Farm, where his father started the family business in 1982. The business moved to the Tirley site in 1994 after continual growth.
Dereck Hartland of Hartland's Cider and Perry was also delighted to hear of his success. He said- ‘I am pleased to have won this award, especially after winning a national award last year as well. I would like to thank my family and loyal customers for their support.'
Andrea Briers, Chair of CAMRA's Cider and Perry Committee said, “I would like to congratulate Mike and Dereck, two of the many producers throughout the country keeping the tradition of perry production alive.”
